Tom Crean

One of the main attractions of Annascaul is the story of Tom Crean and the South pole Inn. Crean was born in 1977 in Gortacurraun. In 1983 he choose what was then a common career option in and around Annascaul – and enlisted in the Royal Navy. In 1901 commander Robert Scott an route to Antarctica, called into New Zealand to refit his ship Discovery. Crean volunteered  and was accepted for the trip.It would be the first of three major expeditions for the young Kerryman. Though his name appears rarely on the records of that first expedition,Crean made his mark with Scott.
