Minard Castle

Minard Castle and beach is about 15minutes drive from Annascaul Village, or if you are walking it should take just under 2 hours at a reasonable pace. It’s perfect for a day-trip from the village and goes in our ‘BascCamp Annascaul’ list of recommended outings.

Directions To Minard Castle
To reach Minard from Annascaul, head out of the village in the Dingle direction (south-west) and take the first left where you see the sign post for Inch. In about 450 m take the right off this road, and just follow the road which will lead to you Minard Castle, a 16th century tower house.

This is a nice road for walking, there’s little traffic and stunning scenery along the length of the road.

The little mountain village of Annascaul on the Dingle Peninsula echoes of mythical legends and modern day heroes. It was in these lonely hills that the fabled celtic warrior CuChulainn fought and killed the mythical warrior Feirdia to win the love of the beautiful Scail. However, she did not return his love as she remained true to Feirdia and Scail drowned herself in the river – after which the village is named, Annascaul. Tom Crean, the Antarctic explored who accompanied Ernest Shackleton, was born here. Upon his return to Kerry from his travels he settled in the village and open the ‘South Pole Inn’. A modern day hero, his memory is still very much alive among the people who live here. Inch beachEnjoy walking the Brackloon rigde with its trio of 300m peaks and magnificent views of the Slieve Mish mountains, the Com Dubh river system, majestic Dingle bay and the never ending Inch strand. A Fortnight Plus Half – An Ireland Adventure.

This video is a bit long but it is well worth your time so maybe save it for your lunch break. Shot recently by two Canadian tourists while they spent three weeks here, and posted on Reddit Ireland last night, it makes this little place feel very big indeed.

The pair travelled all around the country so this clip covers most of the things you’d expect to see, like the Guinness Storehouse, Cliffs of Moher, Rock of Cashel etc… but the rather excellent editing, and great music, makes the old, familiar places look great.

With lots of pictures of all the food, drinks, and sheep, they encountered during their stay, as well as a few funny moments, it certainly should encourage a few more tourists to come here, and a few more of us to pack up the car and see the sights ourselves.
